Top Pop

1. Shakira – “Give it up to me (feat. Lil’ Wayne)”

2. Black Eyed Peas – “Meet me halfway”

3. Rihanna – “Hard (feat. Young Jeezy)”

4. 50 Cent – “Baby by me (feat. Ne-Yo)”

5. Snoop Dogg – “Gangsta luv (feat. The Dream)”

Extras bota-pra-fervê-quebra-piso-de-buatchy

Timbaland – “Morning after dark (feat. Nelly Furtado)”

Timbaland – “Carry out (feat. Justin Timberlake)”

RAZNI IZVODJACI 1995 Gruvanje LIVE vol. 1

Čak šta više i ohrabrivao ih svojim ponašanjem.

KST-u.

But the catch is we want it to be sung with the most unlikely duet partner possible. It could be your Gran, your teacher, your local Tesco checkout guy, anyone at all! You’ll need to post a link either in the comments below or send it to @welovepop on Twitter.

‘3 Words’ featuring will.i.am is OUT NOW, and on iTunes, there’s a Club Mix EP available!

The Club Mix EP features Steve Angello’s Extended Re-Prod, Doman & Gooding’s I Love You Remix and the Geeneus-Rinse FM Main Mix. iTunes also has an exclusive EP of ALL the club radio edits – this includes the incredible Steve Angello Radio Re-Prod.

Looking back on 2009, this year has been a year for big collaborations. This song is no exception bringing together two of the greatest and most successful female artists of the decade. This track is off of Key’s album “The Elements of Freedom” which released yesterday.

Hope you enjoy the track and check out Alicia Key’s full album available on iTunes now.

Kyoto Drive-This Is All We Ever Wanted

Artist: Kyoto Drive
Title: This Is All We Ever Wanted
Website: http://www.myspace.com/kyotodrive
Style: Pop-Punk/ Rock/ Emo
US Label: Pacific Ridge Records
UK Label: Engineer Records
Rating: 8.7 out of 10
By C.W. Ross

Band Lineup: Adam Binder (vocals, bass), Mike Levell (guitar, vocals), Chris Piper (drums) and Mark Piper (guitar, vocals).

Formed in 2008 out of the ashes of two Birmingham, UK hardcore rock bands (Forever Ends Today and Cassettes Lost Meaning) Kyoto Drive first hit the music scene with their 4-song EP, Spotlights & Stars, that they gave away for free to get the band’s name out there amongst the masses. Now the band is back with their full-length debut, This Is All We Ever Wanted on Pacific Ridge Records in the US and Engineer Records in the UK.

The band’s sound is a pretty straight forward pop-punk that at points slides towards a more melodic pop-rock style similar sounding to bands like, Relient K, Jimmy Eat World, Saves The Day, and New Found Glory.

The band’s songs are very catchy, driven by lively guitar parts, be they melodic or in your face hard edged, along with steady drum beats. The lead vocals are filled with passion and you’ll also find some nicely done backing vocals that range from melodic to group shouts in style.

Lyrically the songs found on, This Is All We Ever Wanted, deal with the life of a band and the different struggles involved with it. Love and relationships is another subject dealt with in the band’s songs.

Highlight tracks include, “I’d Give It All”, “Are You Taking Me Apart Just To See How My Insides Work?”, “It’s Not About Revenge”, “Don’t Make It Personal”, and “Hold Your Head High.”

This Is All We Ever Wanted ends with the very powerful emotion-filled 8-minutes plus track, “Waiting.” For the most part the song is an acoustic guitar ballad but it ends with a shot of different noises and sounds.

The album’s official release date is January 26, 2010 with a tour planned for January and February in support of the release. The tour will include band friend’s Maycomb. Checkout the band’s website for more information and tour dates.

That time of year

And I’m not talking about Christmas.

For the masses of University/College/etc. students, it’s exam time! I know some are done, some haven’t started, and some are avoiding work by posting things on their blogs. Either way, one can only take so much Zarah Leander before needing a little break. (I was writing an essay on the portrayal of women in the Third Reich films, aka, Die grosse Liebe). The perfect antidote to an overdose of academia?

or if you’re into the less bizarre, hyperfashionable gumball rock
The Plastiscines are my antidote for life. And they’re French!

Happy studying.

Pearl Harbor - Something About The Chaparrals

Photobucket

Piper and Sky are two sisters from Los Angeles, California. They, along with bassist Cody, play dreamy psych pop in a similar vein to their good friends and fellow Los Angelenos Best Coast. Their melodies wash over me like rays of warm sunshine…i just wish this had come out in mid July.

I Wanna Be In Your Cult - Pat McGlynn

Following a recent resurgence in Japan ex Bay City Roller Pat McGlynn has had all his early solo albums re-released on SONY/BMG in early 2009. We worked together along with his wife and vocalist Janine Bond in late 2008 on four new songs at the Offbeat studio for Pat McGlynn’s STORM earlier this year.

I wrote a track for him in March entitled I Wanna Be In Your Cult.  The track is currently getting lots of airplay in Japan and we are hoping for a hit record. All the tracks are featured on the Offbeat homepage mp3 player. Pat is great to work with and is a true music lover. He’s a gifted guitarist and songwriter

I met Pat back in 1984 when I was working on my solo album under the name ZED with vocalist Kirsty Anderson… I co-wrote two tracks with him and Les McKeown on the BAY CITY ROLLERS hit album Breakout. The title track was originally recorded at Jon Turner’s Palladium studio and also featured Anne Turner on backing vocals. and another on the album called You’ll Find Out was recorded at Wilf Smarties Planet Studios. Wiolf was the guy who discovered Wet Wet Wet and he produced their first hit single “Wishing I Was Lucky’. Apart from being a studio boffin Wilf was instrumental in my training as a recording engineer, giving me a break to work at Planet from 1983 until 1985.

The Jubilaires Form

Click on the pictures above to enlarge

Band: The Jubilaires
Year: 1956
Home: Chatham Ontario
Genre: Country
Formed: 1956

Members (L-R)
Lionel Richie – Drums
Oscar Demers – Rhythm guitar
Roland Lozon – Fiddle
Oscar Benoit – Lead guitar.

Circa: 1956 – 1961

The Jubilaires have a long history that lasted through many decades.

The original line-up was an instrumental group that put on their own dances in order to perform live.
They rented an old hall, which was originally for hay storage on the second floor of a horse stable in Pain Court, next to the Dover Hotel. Posters were made, a bouncer was hired and a refreshment booth was set up.

For the very first dance, the boys cleaned the hall on Wednesday, decorated it on Thursday, played it on Friday night, and cleaned it up on Saturday. They took the profit of $18 and split it 6 ways. These go getters put on a dance every Friday from June 30th to November 30, 1956. The band had played 74 shows before 1960.

Sam Lozon did join the band as the singer and guitarist circa 1957, but retired from the band in the middle of 1960, as his love for music took him to another group.

During performances, the band would usually spot two female singers. Doreen Lecuyer and Louella Demers (Oscar’s sister)

In 1960, The Myers Brothers joined the band resulting in a name change to “Myers Brothers and the Jubilaires (The)”.  After that long run, they became known as the Jubilaires II, followed by a brief and final line-up called “Front Page News”.

Dancing and Memorie5

Norwegian native, pop-indie artist, Annie, began DJing in Bergen, Norway in 1999, when she released the Madonna-sampled, underground smash single, “The Greatest Hit”, which gradually became popular in Norwegian and British nightclubs. Her career took off from that point and she went on to release “Anniemal” in 2004 with the production help/influence of fellow Norwegian band, Röyksopp, and England’s own Richard X. For the most part, however, Annie hasn’t impressed me much past a couple of her original tracks and outstanding remixes, yet, the songs of hers I like, I love!

• Annie – Anthonio

• Annie – Heartbeat

• Annie – The Greatest Hit (Extended Disco Mix)

A Handful Of Remixes

• Annie – Anthonio (Fred Falke Remix)

This Song Has Changed My Life and Appreciation Of Music (Ridiculous I know…But Truly)

• Annie – Anthonio (Designer Drugs Remix)

These 2 Are Alright…

• Annie – Heartbeats (MSTRKRFT Remix)

• Annie – Heartbeats (Röyksopp’s  Mindre Tilgjengelige Remix)

Lessons from Do They Know It's Christmas Time

1. At Christmas time, there truly is no “need to be afraid.” It’s best to reserve your fears for New Year’s Day, when a glitch of unknown origin in computers around the world will set the world back to the Bronze Age.

2. This Christmas time, Band Aid may want to seriously rethink its decision to “let in light and banish shade” for people living under the harsh and unforgiving Ethiopian sun.

3. When they’re in their “world of plenty” and “having fun”, “it’s hard” for Band Aid to “say a prayer for the other ones”. Praying = hard!

4. If the only water flowing tastes like the “bitter sting of tears”, it’s because your local authorities have chosen the world’s least efficient method of augmenting your water supply.

5. Although the only Christmas bells in Ethiopia are the “clanging chimes of doom”, it doesn’t mean they can’t belt out a mean, suicide-inducing “Jingle Bell Rock”.

6. It’s hard to argue with Bono when he commands you to “thank God” it’s the Ethiopians who are dying of hunger “instead of you” unless you are Ethopian or otherwise dying of hunger.

7. “There won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time.” But thanks to cataclysmic global weather events, all of Africa will be under 100 feet of snow in 2030!

8. Because “nothing ever grows” and “no rain or rivers flow” in Africa, Disney ought to more accurately portray Tarzan and the Lion King as shuffling about in a howling desert of pain and death.

9. This Christmas time, if you truly feel the need to “raise your glass” to poor people dying “underneath that burning sun”, be sure to accompany your gesture with loud, maniacal laughter. (edf)

Janet Jackson: The Best/Number Ones - My Album Review

So last week one of the CD’s I picked up was Janet Jackson’s: The Best, her latest greatest hits LP replacing “Design of Decade 1986/1996″ and covering all her hits from the “Control” album all the way up to 2008’s “Discipline”. The CD also includes new single “Make Me” which was dubbed as “A Gift for the Fans”.

I love the CD which is no surprise considering I have all the songs already, but what makes this one different is that you have all the classic songs over two discs rather than having to chop and change over 6 or 7 albums. Also some of the earlier songs sound exceptionally crisp which I love, no guess some remastering was done to bring it up to par with the newer tracks.

What I love about this greatest hits has to be the varation of song styles and topics that span through the 2 discs, something which I find can only be rivaled by possibly Madonna. Both artists have re-invented themselves throughout the years and manged to have careers that spans over 2 decades. Moving more towards my point, its listening to the CD from start to finish that makes you realise how creative Janet as an artist is before even looking at her music videos. I truly think the real artistry of perfecting your craft was left in the 80s as star’s these days seem to be hooked on talking about the same things and then at last resort sampling something that was more than likely conceived in the 80s.

You have people talking about, money, cars, and sex, or to pin point it more to female artists, going to the club, getting a man, keeping your man, leaving your man and then telling all your girls about it, but what else?, where’s the substance?. Then of course you have a real artist like Janet who writes their own songs, and yes maybe covers some of those topics but also talks about the more important things in life racism, spousal abuse, children, getting a education,  depression, empowering women, taking control of your life, the death of loved ones and several other things. So what astound’s me is when people come to the assumption that all Janet talks about is sex? bullsh*t. Buy the cd’s, buy this cd,  listen to the messages, then talk otherwise. Cut it, keep it, seal it, get your facts in order.

Homosexuality and Religion.

The debate still flares with such passion in a modern context, in regards to homosexuality coinciding with religion. Love being the main underlying factor of both of these attributes of humanity creates a tension between the two. From a Catholic perspective the church condemns the act of homosexuality, that is the act of sexual relations between a man and another man, or a woman and indeed another woman. The church however does not condemn same-sex attraction or personal desires so long as they are contained to within the person. For most this is completely outrageous, as they should be able to express their sexuality in a way in which they feel comfortable and safe. But before one can place the blame entirely upon the church one must understand that the church also condemns sexual practices for mere pleasure (therefore the banning of contraception). It is stated that every act of sex should be open to the creation of a human being, which is the church’s main defence when dealing with matters of homosexuality.

YAVANNA – “Una donna migliore”

Io non so).

No, no, non va.

Mostro assoluto. Va in finale.

Come Chiara.

O no? Andava bene come traccia 7 dell’album.

Atlanta – More Than Funky

Michael Jackson: El Cantante se Lleva Cuatro American Musica Awards

por: Agencia
Fuente: AP

Stone cold sober – Del Amitri

Underbart funky…..

Active Force – Rise Up

Starving for sunlight?

U.S.E. has been around since about 2004, a electro group formed after posing to be a group in a Seatle night club and loving the enthusiasm the crowd had, they formed the band United States of Electronica. The group has a few EPs out and 2 albums, one having been released this August. I’ve heard about U.S.E. a few times but their track “River of Love” really caught my attention. This song has the ability to completely change my day around. There is a complete charm to it despite its a quite obvious tacky/cheesy nature. River of Love seems to almost have an anthem quality to it, a song that could define a moment in your life. Reminds me of a less house version of Daft Punk with a sprinkle of bubblegum pop and 1970’s rock. Part of me wishes I had discovered it back in June, drinks and dancing to this song would be nothing short of amazing. Check out the disco-pop and prepare to dance.

Review of Clare & the Reasons' Sophomore Album

Here is my review of Arrow, by Clare & the Reasons, which I did for a local newspaper here in Tacoma, Washington called The Volcano.

Clare & The Reasons (Frog Stand Records 2009)

By Megan Mitchell

November 18, 2009

New York-based indie pop band Clare & The Reasons (Clare Muldaur, Olivier Manchon and Bob Hart, mainly) should not be dismissed as yet another frivolous romp through the format field of other artists in the genre.  Clare & The Reasons combine their talents to create their meticulously composed sophomore album, Arrow.

Featuring My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden (on “This is the Story”) and a cover of Genesis’ “That’s All,” this album is sure to span a unique range of musicality.  Most of the songs feature a lovely string orchestra of violins, violas and cello, often backed by heavy bass drums and Muldaur’s whimsical, almost childlike vocalizations.  In addition to this diverse span of instruments, expect to hear some French horn, synths and lighthearted kazoo in the mix.

Tracks such as “All the Wine” and “Ooh You Hurt Me So,” truly exemplify Muldaur’s hauntingly simplistic vocals, while still revealing the painstakingly precise compositional steps made to present this work of true artistry that spans multiple genres.

Jem

This is the 96th post in our Musician of the Day series.

Jemma Griffiths was born in 1975 in Wales. Jem began writing and singing songs at the age of 13 but instead of going into music she attended Sussex University for a Law degree. She spent her college years working as a DJ agent and even helped to set up and run the label Marine Parade.

It was in 1999 that she set up her own mobile recording studio in order to help with her music promotion efforts. She used this studio to create four demos for herself.

In 2002 she caught a break when one of her demo songs was played on the radio. The track ended up being the most listener requested song at the station and put Jem in as one of the station’s top 5 artists played. The popularity of the track gained the attention of the ATO label who soon signed Jem.

She released an EP in 2003 entitled It All Starts Here and an album Finally Woken in 2004.

After the release of her first album she went to work on another but not before writing and performing songs for movies and television. She wrote the song “Once in a Lifetime” for the movie Eragon and her first single off of her second album, “It’s Amazing” was used in the Sex and the City movie.

In 2008 she released her second album Down to Earth.

The xx - Basic Space

Tubelord - Our First American Friends

What struck me about Tubelord when i first got their Feed Me A Box Of Words EP was their youthful exuberance and boyish charm. The trio from Kingston-upon-Thames didn’t take themselves too seriously, crafting titillating math pop to get your toes tapping and a smile on your face. Well a year has passed since that EP and Tubelord have just released their debut full length. I was really excited to get hold of this as mostly everything i had heard from them before struck a chord with me. But, alas, my excitement was short-lived. Our First American Friends bounds along at a satisfactory pace, but i can’t help but feel the band have played it safe, with only the old favourites Night Of Pencils and I Am Azzarad providing any real compassion and edge. Sporadically the band demonstrate what they are truly capable of, with intricate melodies and jubilant vocal harmonies, however these moments fade all too easily into the generically obscure landscape of the album.

I’ll post up the Feed Me A Box Of Words EP if anyone is interested, just holler.

Lady Gaga Finally BRINGS it

Electronica meets pop meets fashionista.

That’s Lady Gaga.

She is known for her outrageous and obscene yet hard to resist style and music. She is one of a kind.

In her newest single, “Bad Romance,” it begins with a classical melody that sounds like something played during a ballroom dance during the victorian period. It is tweaked by being played on an electronic keyboard of some sort. Then begins to layer with keyboard and vocals followed by bass.

The Chorus makes the song a dance floor hit. It has a catchy melody and lyrics:”I want your love/And I want your revenge/You and me could write a bad romance.”

It all comes together with the bridge where Gaga mixes english and french in the lyrics that brings a sexy, mysterious feeling to the song.

Feel free to make this your newest guilty pleasure, because Lady Gaga has done it again.

Janet Jackson - Scheduled For X-Factor Performance

Superstar Janet Jackson is set to perfrom at the X-Factor semi-finals on December 6th. A source at ITV UK has said the performance is definatley scheduled and they are even trying to persuade her to mentor the acts awsell.

Also that day Janet is confirmed to be performing at Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball in the O2 Arena.

Following all the internet rumours, I’m really glad to hear this it’s great promo for her and help’s to re establish her fanbase in the UK.

I’ve got dibs on her either performing a Medley or her new single for the upcoming greatest hits “Make Me” maybe even both, who knows.

Keep checking back I’ll keep you informed of any developments.

Cheryl Cole - Boy Like You

I don’t normally post videos that don’t have proper videos (either PVs or stage performances) but this song has been in my head for a little while. Cheryl Cole has seemingly set the UK charts on fire with her solo debut. I won’t talk too much about it, because I’ll just start criticising her. I’ve not been overly impressed by the songs that I’ve heard (literally, go into any shop and you’ll hear her soon enough – sometimes the whole album just on repeat!) but one song that I quite like is Boy Like You. It samples the awesome Fleetwood Mac’s White Lies and features will.i.am as guest rapper/general mentor man. Cole’s offering is nowhere near as good as White Lies, let’s get that straight. But it’s made quite good because of the sample. I love 80s music like it’s going out of fashion (quite literally) so to hear this is quite cool. What do you think?

When you thought that only Pharmaceutical companies were the ones making a buck from the soapbox preached swine flu epidemic, think again.  Apple/Google sense blood in the water and are salivating over a piece of the pie too…

iPhone Swine Flu Tracker app will help you stay clear of the Virus

The Swine Flu virus epidemic is certainly a serious issue that one shouldn’t take lightly. In light of this, a Swine Flu Tracker app for the iPhone is apparently ready for public use and is, in fact, just waiting for approval for distribution in the App Store.

IntuApps is the company behind this app which will hopefully help educate people as to the current status of this virus and its various symptoms. We still don’t know when it will get approved, but news of such a very useful and informative app just waiting for the go signal from Apple is good enough on its own. What’s even better is that, from what we hear, it will also be offered free of charge.

With no clear sign that the epidemic will be over soon, the Swine Flu Tracker app will definitely be helpful in the coming months to stay clear of the contagious virus. We’re just hoping that it doesn’t take long for Apple to see the value of this app and finally approve it for distribution in their App Store.

Music Review: Pearl Jam - Backspacer

I’ve waited a long time for this.  New Pearl Jam!!  MMMMMM….Good!  But, should I just continue to gush here about how much I love it or should I at least attempt to be objective and unbiased? Yeah, I’m gonna gush about it….

Seriously, Pearl Jam may be single handedly saving rock music from the eternal abyss.  Think about it–how many other rock bands out there are not only writing their own music, but have been doing so consistently for 18 years now all the while evolving their sound over and over again and owning it every time? A lot of bands fail to create their own sound from the first album on…and many can never seem to repeat that sound in a convincing way.

OK, so maybe I’m propping Eddie and the boys up on a high pedestal, I’ll admit.  But, this is their 9th studio album and it is nothing like any of the albums before it…just like Pearl Jam was before it and Riot Act was before it and Binaural and so on (though I know that I don’t have to tell you because you already have them all……right?).  The album clocks in at 36.5 minutes which makes it the tightest Pearl Jam album ever.  No 5 minute guitar solos on this record.  But that doesn’t take away from any of the songs.  In fact, this album sounds like the guys from Pearl Jam have found a new place in life where they are at peace.  Take the first single The Fixer (video embedded below).  They lyrics of the song are about the want to fix things that appear broken…but the music isn’t angry punk influenced rock, rather it’s more poppy punk influenced rock.  No need to adjust your eyes–you read that right.  It’s poppy.  It’s amazing and unlike anything else they’ve ever done.  In fact, I’d say that the entire album is more poppy than their past works.  And Eddie penned a very pretty song called Just Breathe that stays with the acoustic sound he used on the Into The Wild soundtrack. Some reviews have already remarked about the song being wedding worthy.  No joke.

Then there’s the business side of this record that is really interesting.  Since fulfilling their record contract with the major label (and J records with the last album) they are selling and promoting this album on their own.  They negotiated contracts for distribution to independent record stores across the nation, its on iTunes, and they have an exclusive agreement with Target. Yes, that Target…the same place you buy your toothpaste.  Now, I know it seems odd that the same guys who tried to sue Ticketmaster back in the day are selling their album through a big box store, but in a way it’s the ultimate way to stick it to the man.  They not only got Target to agree to let them also sell it in independent record stores and on iTunes, but Target agreed to buy 10 million copies right off the bat.  That’s more than the last record sold to this day.  And they are doing it themselves–they are not paying a fee to a record company or any other middle man.  It’s a sweet deal to be sure, but a lot of other bands wouldn’t be able to get a deal like this–a lot of them are just not big enough draws.

So, if you haven’t picked this up yet, what are you waiting for?!

X Factor 3, ottava puntata, esce Damiano Fiorella

16-24 ANNI

OVER 25

One Foot Out The Door

Taken straight from iTunes…

On his much anticipated sophmore CD ‘One Foot Out The Door’, singer/ songwriter/ producer, Mike Posner has developed his signature sound into a movement that has gotten him signed to J Records, on stages opening for the likes of Akon and on the pages of The New York Times, The New York Post and XXL Magazine. And he’s still a senior at Duke University! On his latest effort Mike deftly crafts a rich soundscape of hard hitting instrumentals coupled with clever songwriting indicative of someone twice his age. While his first mixtape posited it was only ”A Matter of Time” until his buzz took off, on this offering, he makes it clear he has ”One Foot Out The Door” into the stratosphere. Featuring guest appearances from Kid Cudi, Bun B, Big Sean, GLC, 3Oh!3, Freddie Gibbs and XV, “One Foot Out The Door” is sure to top best of 2010 lists

Free From iTunes like always… or get the MP3’s if you would like…

One Foot Out The Door: iTunes

One Foor Out the Door: MP3

Quick Edit… The one song I have been waiting for the most, Please Don’t Go, is NOT on this (version of the) mixtape… lets hope it comes out on thurs… but heres a pretty good quality live version for you for now

Robbie Williams: A nice bloke with a good voice who's not on drugs anymore releases quite good album that you ought to buy

Been a little quiet of late, but bursting out of the blocks after what was, in all reality, a fairly okay performance on the X Factor, comes Mr Robbie Williams at the BBC’s Electric Proms.

In what was without doubt a great show, in front of an adoring crowd, Robbie confirmed what I had thought about him for a very long time – that he’s a genuine star with more class and quality than most people give him credit for.

With the press already writing him off before the run-in to Christmas and the – dramatic pause – battle with the reality TV production line of pseudo-stars, Burke, Boyle and Cole – Robbie would be forgiven for thinking that the only thing the papers would really like to see him do is (a) overdose or (b) rejoin Take That after his relaunch nosedives.

I wonder whatever happened to hoping for the best for our pop kids – that they do well and sell bucketloads. But then, in this culture of manufactured conflict and petty hate machinations, what should we expect? The time for the headline that reads, “Robbie Williams: A nice bloke with a good voice who’s not on drugs anymore releases quite good album that you ought to buy” seems quite far off. But not here – that’s why that is the title of the blogpost.

He’ll never have the gravitas to be a George Michael, but he will be around for a very, very long time, irrespective of how much the papers are determined to bring him down before he’s even started on this round of the pop ferris wheel. Haters. Grow up.

Anyway, back to the meat, and the show at the Camden venue earlier this week was simply brilliant. How much of that was down to the presence of the Buddha of British Pop Music, Trevor Horn, his wife and Oscar nominated composer, Anne Dudley, a string and brass section that added a huge lush layer to the production, is open to conjecture. You can’t deny, however, when a performer connects so easily with his audience, and can give a short showcase to new album tracks that easily stand with the rest of his back-catalogue with such confidence, that there is something magical about the lad.

Stop being so bitter.

Love this pop life.

It’s called entertainment. Be entertained.

Let him entertain you…

Cheryl Cole — Fight For This Love

First question: why is Cheryl Cole dancing in her leopard-print pajamas?
Second question: why does Cheryl Cole channel 2008 Lady Gaga at 0:29? It’s not working for her.

I’m not sure whether the bass on this video is simply dysfunctional, but the choreography in this video does seem to match the audio at all. The former is very aggressive, while Cheryl’s vocals are not nearly that strong. The instrumentals don’t help much. I appreciate the effort taken with visuals, but the song is too distractingly light to keep it all together.

REVIEW: Nellie McKay @ Dimitriou's Jazz Alley (Seattle, WA - 10/20/09)

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

So, I had tickets to see Ben Folds with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra at Benaroya Hall last night.  I hemmed and hawed and finally decided to sell my ticket on craigslist to go see Nellie McKay instead.  I dig both of them as artists, and the main reason for the hemming and hawing was the whole symphony aspect (I mean, I’ve seen Ben Folds Five or solo a half dozen times already… so the symphony take on it was my main draw).  Ah, but… Nellie totally has my heart when in a piano/vocalist celebrity deathmatch with Mr. Folds.  She’s quirky, cute, writes and sings both silly and political songs, has a passionate love for animals (she’s a vegetarian with a stance on animal cruelty that makes me proud), and… you rarely know what to expect from her musically on any given night.  I’ve seen her twice prior, and both times were fantastical suprises.

Sorry, Ben.  Next time?

As a consolation for the Ben Folds fans, there’s a free mp3 stream (or download if you do some research, i.e.- “view source”) from the Huffington Post of the Ben Folds collaboration with author Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, etc).  It’s a jab song at the ex-fiance of ex-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol… from the HuffPo, I present you ”Levi Johnston’s Blues.”

Speaking of the HuffPo… here’s a recent article / interview with Nellie McKay by Michael Giltz.

Oh, so Nellie’s latest album, Normal As Blueberry Pie, is all about Doris Day (a total of 14 Doris Day tracks in the recording session, and one Nellie original).  Two of the 15 session tracks are more difficult to get ahold of, unless you want to buy both the “exclusive” Barnes & Noble bonus track version and the iTunes bonus track version.  Have I mentioned that Universal Music Group’s tactics suck!?  Anyway, the album is great (special track tactics notwithstanding).  The album lacks some of the bite and wit of Nellie’s prior 3 (and a half) solo albums.  But, I love it all the same.  It’s got Nellie trademark nostalgia / campiness, as evidenced by the photos surrounding the release (see to the right).

OK… on to the review of the show…

I really dig Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley.  It’s large enough, but quite small and intimate.  Also the idea of making an experience out of the show – a fantastic meal, great atmosphere, and an attentive audience makes for a wonderful evening.  Oh, and free parking in downtown Seattle is like the cherry on top.  This was only my second time here (Hiromi in June was my first), but it is quickly becoming one of my favorite venues in the PacNW, if not ever.  I just wish it wasn’t so far away from me in Eugene all the time.

The Jazz Alley’s description of Nellie as a “martini cool chanteuse” is kinda of spot on.

[live photos to be posted Saturday]

Nellie went on around 7:40pm with her backing band, The Aristocrats.  This was my first time seeing Nellie with a band.  They were excellent.  They were all younger than I was expecting.  I mean, this wasn’t her studio backing band… but as hired guns solely for touring, they really worked well with Nellie in a fun & playful way.  The band was Nellie McKay (piano and ukulele), Howard Fishman (guitar), Charles Schiermeyer (sax), Ben Bynum (drums), Scott Litroff (violin and flute), and Daniel Policar (keys).

[live photos to be posted Saturday]

Setlist: just shy of 90 minutes

  • The Very Thought of You (Doris Day cover)
  • A Wonderful Guy (Doris Day cover)

  • I Wanna Get Married (Doo Wop Version, with Gary Danielson on sax) *a fave of the night*

[live photos to be posted Saturday]

So, yeah, holy crap… Nellie just keeps on getting better each time I see her.  I thought I’d be slightly bummed by a mostly Doris Day set (as I really like Nellie’s original songs a lot), but the Doris Day material was really fantastic in a live band setting.  The addition of a jazz combo behind her really made the songs gel, and her interaction with the others was really fun.  She’s kinda of a nutty person (or maybe as corny as Kansas in August)… but I wouldn’t want her to be any other way.  I didn’t get a chance to meet her after the show, but I had a fun night regardless.  Nellie and the Aristocrats are playing a second night (Wednesday, October 21st) at the Jazz Alley.  If you go, drop me a line with your thoughts on Night 2.

[live photos to be posted Saturday]

Some of the best lines of the night by Nellie…

“I still can’t go back to Olympia, because I have overdue library books.”

“There’s hashish in that music… that was a score!” (really funny in context)

If you don’t have her newest one, get it… it’s fun (and out on vinyl, too):

Cheryl Cole has the X Factor?

I recently watched Cheryl Cole’s performance in the X Factor, and I hate to say it but it was cool. I have been criticising her singing ability ever since ‘Girls Aloud’ was formed, but damn you cant hate when credit is due. She was very sexy for one and she held the notes of her song ‘fight for this love’ without sounding out of tune. I am not declaring that she is a new diva who is about to emerge with a voice as great as the likes of the old Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey. But I am saying she is good enough to be in the category of today’s female pop star and she is a great accessory to add to any man’s arm. Although I do think Ashley Cole does not match up to her standards, lol. But yes, dudes she is pretty hot, maybe we should throw her a bouquet or something!

So what do you think, Cheryl Cole, Hot or Not?

we simply ate non-stop!

on children’s day,

the jobless gang went on an impromptu jb trip!

we took this picture before lester arrives and it’s the only picture with king chan.

because he brought his punch-holed-and-old-and-expired passport instead of his new one to the immigration.

so while the 5 of us went ahead,

he had to go home.

haha.

and so like what my title says,

we simply ate NON-STOP the whole time we were there!

our first “meal” of the day:

ems and i had some fruit juice before heading for lunch.

then lunch was at sizzling stonegrill:

as if the grilled meat wasn’t enough to fill our tummies,

we went on to have desserts at baskin robbins!

msia trips are never complete without an ice-cream at baskin robbins i say!

the ever generous brendon treated us to this 40scoops chocolate fondue that’s oh-so-yummy!

except for that greenish looking almond flavour ice-cream that we all didn’t like heh.

and because we wanted to fit more stuff into our stomachs later,

we decided to take a break and go for movies.

the movies there were dirt cheap!

we each spent less than 3 bucks for THE UGLY TRUTH.

and the formula to watching such cheap movies?

dig out all your student cards for student discount!

because ems and hx forgot to bring their matric cards,

lester and i threw in our alumnus card and student ez-link card.

that lady at the counter even photocopied the cards for reference,

without even realising there were repeated cards! :X

thank goodness we didnt get caught!

anyway,

something random:

we saw this outside the movie theater

do i look more like 刘青云 or lester more like 古天乐?

i don’t really want to know the answer by the way.

hahaha.

so after the movie,

we went on to do some workout at the arcade with..

BISHI BASHI!

i think we’re all quite zai at it!

(and ems is surprisingly super good at it!)

and (random again),

this is something you don’t see in singapore arcades:

ktv capsules where you can simply insert tokens to sing!

interesting ah!

but they only have malay songs i think.

so obviously after all that bishi bashi-ing,

we had space to spare in our tummies once again and we proceeded to shilin for snacks!

and we even had some auntie anne’s pretzels + secret recipe cakes to go along with.

just that i forgot to take pictures of them.

and after that we walked around some more to digest the food before our last stop at:

the much-raved about golden balls (bottom right picture) were alright only.

lester dua pao!

heh.

so when we finally couldnt squeeze anything more into our stomachs,

we went back.

one last groups photo before we splitted into different cabs home.

and this got to be the photo of the day:

hehe.

this jb trip definitely wasn’t a BORING one.

(inside joke heh!)

And a peacock too!

I have seen the video, my friends.  We don’t get all that many opportunities in life to confirm our memories with hard proof, but in this particular case I have a VHS tape full of proof, and the main point I want to make, based on this footage, is that our elementary school was often PROFOUNDLY RIDICULOUS.

I am referring to a tape my grandfather must have made of our 2nd/3rd grade Christmas musical.  I’m sure all of you were in Christmas  plays at one time or another.  In the South they’re unavoidable, even if you attend a supposedly non-sectarian public school.  (My friend Sarah, who is Jewish, has a great story about the Christmas-Around-the-World pageant she was required to perform in during 1st grade.  The teacher was going around assigning countries for each student to represent.  When it was Sarah’s turn, she tried to protest, telling the teacher, “but I’m Jewish!”  The teacher said, “That’s perfect, Sarah!  Then you can be Christmas in Israel!”)  Everyone did a Christmas play.  I’m sure most of the ones we did had the basic Jesus-Mary-Joseph theme, with a backup cast of wise men, shepherds, and angels.  But this one year, our music teacher decided to put on Angels and Lambs, Ladybugs and Fireflies – a performance that in the end required a literal ton of fabric, sparkles, and fake feathers.

Angels and Lambs is actually a fairly popular children’s Christmas musical written by a man named Fred Bock.  I mention Mr. Bock because when I lived in California, I was often confronted with people who believed that intense religiosity was the strict provenance of the deep South.  What I learned from living in both places is that each has its own brand of religion.  The difference is that California’s is more televangelism than ours.  SoCal is home to Mr. Bock (who was music minister for the Hollywood Presbyterian Church for enormous numbers of years) as well as the weird weird weird world of the Crystal Cathedral – whose yearly Christmas play completely outdoes anyone else’s standards of absurdity.  (Their angels actually “fly” in from the super-high vaulted ceilings using Hollywood-type props – and with looks of sheer fright on their faces.  Their stage has a hidden fountain, and they use real animals during production – including a couple of camels.)

The basic plot of Bock’s work is that a population of wild creatures – bugs, birds, lambs, and for some reason a peacock –  are present during the shepherds’ conversation about the birth of the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.  They (meaning the creatures) then have a discussion about whether they should go to the birth too.  They eventually decide that as creatures of the air and field they can spread the good news about Jesus’ birth, and that they will head to Bethlehem, telling everyone they meet along the way.

What I remember most about this play is the costumes.  We had a huge contingent of kids spreading across all classes of two grades, and the stage was filled with little ones dressed as creatures of the earth and sky.  Now, if this had been a public school production, the costumes would likely have been fairly simple – affordable.  But we were not a public school, and most of our student body had money coming out of their ears and other orifices.  So our teacher (whom I actually remember liking) decided she would follow the VERY PRECISE instructions on costume-construction that come from the booklet accompanying the play.  (This play is available for purchase through Amazon, by the way.  It comes with sheet music, a play booklet, and detailed costume and set designs, should any of you want to put on your own production.)  Erin and I had to go to a professional seamstress to have our butterfly wings sewn onto our little black leotards.

So the first thing that struck me as my mom and I watched this old home movie were the crazy costumes.  The back of the stage was lined with birds of all types – eagles, parrots, flamingos, and one poor kid sporting a peacock’s outspread feathers made from cardboard and taking up 3/4 of rear-center stage.  Whenever he walked to the microphone at the front of the stage to deliver his one line, he had to move sideways to keep from hitting anyone.

Secondly, I really was very tall.  I am by far the biggest butterfly.  Also, somehow in a cast of probably 80 kids Erin and I still managed to get placed right next to each other on stage.  We’re both butterflies and we’re standing next to each other the entire time, even though I’m on the back row with the tall kids and all you can see is the top of Erin’s head.  I am always amazed at how much time we were able to spend together.  In most cases good friends get separated during events like this, mostly because teachers are afraid they’ll talk and cause a ruckus.  I guess our reputation as Goody-Two-Shoes prevented this.  In fact, I am SUCH a Goody-Two-Shoe that I get cast as the butterfly who eventually argues that yes, all creatures great and small SHOULD go to the birth of Jesus.  This seems on par with my childhood go-with-the-flow philosophy.   (I was also the angel Gabriel – wrongly gendered – in numerous Christmas productions.  My niche in these plays seems to be as the figure of ultimate Good.  Interesting.  I think maybe it’s because I had a pretty loud, clear voice for a kid.  If there’s one line you want people to hear, it’s the line about how “God has sent his baby son to be a savior for everyone!”)

Thirdly, I remembered something about the powerful politics of school plays.  We’ve already mentioned that Melissa was part of our school’s elite.  And Erin mentioned a few posts back that Melissa’s mother was very young and pretty.  But she was also a member of one of the local Baton Rouge theater troupes.  In Melissa’s words, she was an “actress” – the sort of person who was always talking about doing “legitimate theater”.  And it’s true that Miss Annie* always seemed to have costumes and props lying around the house when we visited.  Once Miss Annie and her Junior League friends decided to throw an elaborate tea party with a 1920’s theme for one of Melissa’s younger sisters.  Melissa and Erin and I were somehow recruited to serve tea at the party, and Miss Annie dressed all of us up in authentic Roaring 20’s garb.  I have no idea why this happened.

At any rate, Melissa constantly bragged about her mother’s theatric connections.  And somehow, some way, she always managed to get appointed as the “star” of any school play.  During Angles and Lambs, she played Mary, one of the only two actual human characters and the ONLY one who got to sit down through the entire production, while the rest of us had to stand for hours during rehearsals, trying not to twitch or fidget.

I was complaining to my mom about this as we watched the video.  And then she reminded me of something I had completely forgotten.

(Beware: cheesy moralistic ending fast approaching…) At the end of the performance that night, I was standing around getting hugs and congratulations from my parents and grandparents, who all attended our one-night show.  (My dad even attended despite his bronchitis.  You can hear him coughing during the video.)  Melissa walked over to us and started talking to my parents, shaking hands with my grandparents, ever the big adult girl.  Then, still in complete Mary regalia, she said, “Can you drive me home?”

My mom was puzzled.  ”Melissa, aren’t your parents here?”

No.  They were not there.  My mom continued questioning her for a few minutes, just to make sure she had full grasp of the situation.  ”So your mom told you to just grab a ride with someone else?”  She had.

So Melissa rode home with us that night.  And my mom reports that, even in the car, she was still the consummate actress.  She delivered an extensive monologue on the pains of working with Mike, the very sweet boy who had been her Joseph.  He was NOT an adequate Joseph, and he had NOT listened to Melissa’s various directives.  My mom says that this really was a monologue – that Melissa was already more grown up than the rest of us, and that she knew how to work an audience.  She was self-aware in a way that most of us wouldn’t be until years later, when we started grasping the border between fantasy and reality.  Melissa was a girl who always knew EXACTLY what she was doing.

So, as cheesy as this is, it’s nice to realize that even though I hated her star power at the time, my whole family was at that play.  Hers left her to find a ride, even though she had a solo and was ostensibly the star.  I guess they needed to sit around and try on short robes again, or something else equally important.

*again, not her real name.  But it should be noted here that we did refer to all mothers by their first names, with a “Miss” prefix.  This is just what you do in the South.  Only teachers were known by their last names.  And although I am now a full fledged adult in my late twenties, if I ran into Erin’s mom on the street I would probably still use her name with “Miss.”  I just can’t do it any other way.
