Twitterwatch: Sam Taylor's Next Song

Back on January 23, British singer Sam Taylor – who is one of my 10 Performers to Watch in 2010 – tweeted that “come 2000 followers my new song shall be posted”.  Now it doesn’t say that it will be FREE now folks – though that may be the best way to go to raise Sam’s profile in the international Interweb music world.

But really, it’s been about a year now since “Run Away” (my #1 song of 2009) and “Sometimes I Need You” grabbed my undivided attention as a part of the soundtrack to the UK TV show “Beautiful People”.  A few other fleeting songs on Sam’s MySpace page only whetted my appetite for more from this amazing new talent.

So the solution?

Follow Sam on Twitter @sammytaylor – currently he has 699 followers!!

You too can be part of the big plan when his new tunes begin to arrive.  Sam describes his next group of songs to be a mix of ballads and uptempo tracks – think One Republic’s Ryan Tedder in one direction, and Justin Timberlake’s “LoveStoned” in the other – absolutely cannot wait!!

I’ll defer to this video by our blogger of the Grammys, Arjan Writes, who interviewed an extremely modest and low key Sam.

Mail

For anything you do online, basically, you’ll need an email address. Sometimes your internet provider offers one, included in your internet connection, but that’s getting less and less common these days. Having more than one email address can be useful. You might want to use them for different things, for instance to separate your work email and your personal email.

Whatever you want to use your email address for these are good, free email providers:

Webmail
It’s like you’d guess – email available through a web page. Of course, you’ll need to sign up through a web page for all kinds of email accounts. You’ll also need an internet connection to check your email, but you must know that already.

I use the following free providers:

Icerocket webmail
Care2 webmail
MailPuppy
Caring4Animals.com

They’re all good, and offer quite a lot of storage space. Of course they’re nothing like Gmail, which I haven’t tried myself. I’ve heard they keep all your emails indefinitely and they use your emails to display ads (which is reasonable, since they offer so much space, but I’m not sure I’d like it).

Then there’s something in between webmail and POP mail. It’s called imap. You can use that exactly as a webmail address, and just log on to the site, but if you prefer you can also set up your email program to check your email and download it onto your computer. Well, in a way. There’s also a copy left on the email server. That’s the main difference. You can check your email from home or from work or wherever you are.

Fastmail is a very good email provider. You get to choose between several different domain names for your email, but to tell the truth, most of them are kind of lame. I’d just go with fastmail.fm or something like that.

Then there’s POP mail, which means you really download your email to your computer and usually you get to email out as well. That means you won’t be able to access the same emails from somewhere other than where your email program is.

GMX offers a fantastic email service. You can collect all your other email accounts into one and you get lots of storage, again, not like Gmail, but good enough.

I also use Gmx.net (a German service) but now you’ll need to have a postal address in one of the German-speaking countries and the signup process is all in German. The same goes for any potential customer support. It’s all in German.

If you pay for your own web space, chances are you’ll get email addresses there too.

I use Eudora as my email program. If you’re a Mac user, like me, you also get Mail with your computer or you can download it. In the end, I decided to use Eudora, but Mail is very good too.

Beyonce Believes In Her "Sweet Dreams"

[lastfm]Beyonce Knowles[/lastfm] has been a fixture at the GRAMMY awards ever since she rose to fame with the all girl R&B group [lastfm]Destiny’s Child[/lastfm] in the late ’90s.  Since then she’s successfully launched a career as a solo artist as she cemented herself as a pop music icon selling more than 100 million albums including her time in [lastfm]Destiny’s Child[/lastfm].

For a more in depth look at [lastfm]Beyonce[/lastfm]’s monumental career keep reading after the jump!

[pullquote quote="I am the luckiest woman in the world." credit="Beyonce Knowles"]  [lastfm]Beyonce[/lastfm] is one of the leading artists of the 21st Century.  In addition to her talent as a singer, she’s also an acclaimed actress, producer, songwriter and model making her one of the most successful crossover artists of the decade.

Her split from [lastfm]Destiny’s Child[/lastfm] came after the release of her first solo album Dangerously In Love in 2003;  as the tremendous success of this album lead to the group’s disbanding.  Her sophomore album B’Day was released in 2006 and solidified her as a megastar and solo-artist.

In November 2008, [lastfm]Beyonce[/lastfm] released her third solo album, I Am…Sasha Fierce selling 482,000 copies in it’s first week and topping the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.  It’s earned five number one singles and to date has sole over six million copies worldwide.

The interesting thing about the dual nature of the album because of the use of Sasha Fierce, Beyonce’s diva alter ego.  Half the tracks were ballads, while the other half of the tracks were electro-dance.  While visiting “The Oprah Winfrey Show” she explained:

… One side has songs that are more mainstream and another has my more traditional R&B songs for my fans who’ve been there the whole time.  “Some of it sounds like Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter and The Beatles” around the 1970s.

[lastfm]Beyonce[/lastfm]’s first single off the album, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four non-consecutive weeks, granting her with her fifth number one single in the U.S.  “Halo” her fourth single released reached the number five spot on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Beyonce her 12th Top 10 single on the list as a solo artist, making her as the woman with the most Top 10 hits in the decade.

In addition to that she’s got the highest cumulative weeks at number one on Billboards Top 100, lasting 36 weeks in the number one spot, and with 18 top 40 hits she’s also obtained the most Top 40 hits this decade.  However, her musical achievements have been noticed by the music community as she was named Billboard magazine’s “Woman Of The Year” in 2009, to which she responded, “ I am the luckiest woman in the world.”

Finally, she was nominated for ten GRAMMYs, including Album of the Year for I Am… Sasha Fierce, Record of the Year for “Halo”, and Song of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).  With her grace, poise, talent and professionalism it will be interesting to see Beyonce take the stage at the 52nd GRAMMY awards, as both a performer and a possible winner.

Today in Review: Kellie Pickler~"Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You"

Hey Ya’ll!!

What a crazy weekend!! :)   Anyways, back to emails and phone calls today.  Thought I would check out a top 20 CMT video this week from Kellie Pickler, “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You”.   Wow…Ms. Pickler made me blush!  Sexy song, sexy outfits, and sexy poses basically wraps up this video!  Great shots (reminds me of Castle Cantania in Sicily), along with ”almost” sepia color washes give Kellie and this video a definite glow!!!  Beach scenes were a little Shania Twainish, but hey…it’s been at least 10 years, right?  ;)   I give this video an 7!

Check out the video @ Kellie Pickler – Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You at www.yallwire.com!!!

What Moguls Watch

From time to time, I put work aside and watch a little TV. I will admit it’s not much, but when I do, I tune into the best. For the most part, I think TV rots the brain. But every once in a while…..a jewel shows up.

By now you know that UML staff are voracious music buffs. If you are too, then I can’t imagine You haven’t discovered(click the image for a preview):

The show features some of the top artists in the industry recording live at the world’s most famous recording studio, Abbey Road. Whatever your flavor, Live From Abbey’s got it. Check your local listings.

cover charge? say it ain't so

word on the street is pauly d will be at mcfadden’s thursday night — when i will most likely take the opportunity to redeem myself and verify that he is a real human being! allegedly there’s a $20 cover charge, which i’d say is pricey . . . but for the chance to party at the same bar as the fist-pumper of all fist-pumpers — who is also, btw, the same guy who gave a guido makeover to one of my favorite geek-chic celebs, michael cera, above — ?? spending a night in the same vicinity as pauly d holds good promise as a hilarious experience. it might be worth the dough.

Craig Ramsey - Parting Gift For A Party Girl

Genre: Pop, Indie Pop
Year: 2009
Location: Cleveland, OH
Label: Unsigned
MySpace

01. Right Back Where We Are
02. We Are Crashing
03. Love Knows No Age
04. If You Won’t Try
05. Now We’re Here
06. I Want You There
07. On Your Own

09. Some Things Never Change
10. Going To Bed
11. You’ll Please Them All
12. I’m Making You Think

Craig Ramsey might be one of the hardest working guys in the Cleveland music scene. He writes, records, and performs with Cleveland indie pop heroes Bears, plays drums for Cleveland twee favorite Afternoon Naps, produces music for numerous bands, and on top of all that finds time to form his own band and record/produce his own album. My first experience with Craig’s band was when I saw him and his backing band, The Nice People, open for Bowerbirds and Megafaun. It was especially nice seeing a few of my friends and Tom from Afternoon Naps in the Nice People. As for Parting Gift For A Party Girl, I’ll start off by saying this does sound similar to Bears, but it does differ in some respects. The biggest difference I would say is definitely the production, as Craig’s album sounds crisper and cleaner than any of the Bears records. I found out from Craig himself that Bears’ new album is going to be produced the same way, which is something to really look forward to. As for the songs, they are quick, catchy, and to the point. The standout for me has been “If You Won’t Try”, with its dancey verses, somber chorus, and the incredible multiple vocal ending. If you are a Bears fan, or in any way into pop music, you will love this!

Hit repeat

Zambri

This is far too good to pass up. Like, call up your mom good and say “Hey mom, I heard this amazing band, and you HAVE to listen to them” but then you realize that your mom would much rather listen to Neil Young than a young pop band from Brooklyn. Zambri consists of 2 sisters with lead vocals and a couple boys in the back to support. Pretty sure they are nothing short of amazing. You’ll like them, trust me. They sound like a fusion of Tegan & Sara meets Sleigh Bells. Which I’m not sure is the perfect comparison but it works in my head. Providing us with beautiful pop melodies, infectious synth beats, captivating guitars, and an overall fantastic sound Zambri will give you some tracks to put at the top of your play lists. Have I built them up enough? Try and contain yourselves when listening to these tracks, and don’t be surprised if you hear this remix in the clubs soon.

Cheryl Cole & will.i.am - 3 Words MV

So, I know I’m late but just wanted to blog about Cheryl Cole’s latest song, 3 Words. It features will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas and well, the song isn’t amazing. In fact, I don’t think Cheryl Cole is amazing. She’s not my favourite Girls Aloud member but her solo effort has been enjoyable. The song is a thumping, pulsing electro pop song that to me, sounds much more sadder than Cole would ever be happy with. Anyways, the video is exquisite. It’s amazing. I’ve not seen such an intersting for ages. Forget Lady Gaga’s works, check it out. It’s simple but artistic and really highlights the loneliness I think this song is actually about.

Ellie Goulding

This is what I like to see, a new style of music being experimented with and Ellie Goulding, with the help of Frankmusik, is certainly breaking the mould of generic singers.

At the age of 22, she has not only won the Critic’s choice award at the Brits, but she has also be named number one for the BBC sound of 2010, as announced this morning. With the previous winners being the likes of, Mika, Adele and Little Boots, she has a lot to live up to, but she is already proving she is more than just a pretty face from Herefordshire. Her debut single “Under the sheets” uses a mixture of folk, electronic and pop to create a unique sound that compliments her amazing voice. Her debut album, “Lights” is due to be released on 1st March and judging by her debut single and the fact she has already performed in Later with Jools Holland, Ellie Goulding is surely going to be the name on everyone’s lips in 2010.

Her debut single is available for download from iTunes or you can listen to it from her myspace page as well as a few other tracks, so go and have a listen and tell me what you think of this new artist.

Bluesday: Orianthi

For this weeks Tuesday Bluesday, I’d like to point everyone toward a really exceptional young guitar player.  Australia-born Orianthi grabbed the attention of such guitar greats as Steve Vai and Cartlos Santana when she was just a teen.   Santana is quoted as saying that if he had to chose someone to carry on his legacy, he would chose Orianthi. She was hired by Michael Jackson to join him on his final tour, featured in the recent film This Is It, based on her impressive ability to recreate Eddie Van Halen’s famous “Beat It” solo.

She is a rising star with supreme chops. Her debut album Believe combines earnest pop-rock with staggering guitar work. Although she isn’t exclusively a blues player, she can plays the blues with wonderful soul. It refreshing to see a girl like Orianthi, with such fire in her playing, making big waves in the boys-club of guitar players.

Review: Double U - Pineapple Dream

Double U – Pineapple Dream
Wool Recordings 2010

[tags: dream pop, pop, indietronic]

Listen while reading:

Supersize (from Pineapple Dream)

Sweet Family (from Pineapple Dream)

___________________________________________________

Sometimes I just need a small breeze of dream pop and only yesterday I received a nice music submission from a label and a band I was completely unaware of until now. Wool Recordings from France send over a copy of Double U’s new album called Pineapple Dream. Even though the album name reminded me a bit of Ursula 1000’s title track of his 2002 full length Kinda’ Kinky, Double U is far away of being jazzy electronic lounge pop (but again they are not this far away as one may thinks).

Franck Rabeyrolles, the man behind the moniker, finished his fourth album with Pineapple Dream that is going to be released by Wool Recordings in March 2010. Overall I would call the record a calm dream pop album with some acoustic influences and nice spherical atmospheres and arrangements. The tracks live from Franck’s voice as well as from the manifold synthesizer melodies accompanied by some electric guitar (very nice examples of this are the tracks Take The Bus or the great Ring Me featuring singing saw). Other elements you’ll find are some female backing vocals and all sorts of electronic sounds used as percussions. And speaking of percussions, here is one thing I did not like so much about Pineapple Dream – the drum machine. Sometimes the drum sounds are a bit too retro for my taste because I don’t like to be reminded of the drum machine all the time. But this criticism doesn’t hit all the tracks (e.g. the title track or the stunning The Wedding work very well) and I’m not sure at all if all track were recorded with some electronic fellow on drums – but sometimes it’s a bit too much for me.

Besides that I think I should mention, that Double U doesn’t sound like you may think, for Franck plays a very different style in comparison to genre colleagues like Beach House, Sleep Whale or the fascinating Introductions. I think Beach House focuses more on the word dream and Introductions more on the aspect of combining folk and dream pop. Double U comes in underlining the word pop in dream pop, because some track brake out of the dream pop genre right into some sort of twee or indie pop like areas (e.g. I Made Up My Mind or Enough). But still there are moments that can be called regular dreamy dream pop with all the dreaminess you can imagine (hushed vocals inclusive), just like the great Breathing The Wind.

In the end Pineapple Dream is a fresh sounding record with lots of melodies, that isn’t afraid of being pop-y in the regular sense of the word with a good portion of indietronic sometimes. Most of the time it is dreamy but at some points it’s a bit too retro (especially in the drum sound) for my personal taste. So, if you are looking for a nice little dream pop CD, you should risk an ear on Double U’s new album coming out in March 2010. To buy the record, head over to the label’s page – and, as ever, visit Double U on his MySpace site for further impressions.

Chiwawa- Don't Wanna Talk

Some call Chiwawa post-modern, post-punk, electro-acoustic hybrid, others call it simply rock or pop. The musicians’ wide musical background delivers a rich and seductive sound with infectious grooves.

Chiwawa’s core is Laurie, the daughter of Hungarian immigrants, and Krassy, born and raised in communist Bulgaria. Within three months of their meeting, Krassy was being deported and Laurie had no choice but to save the band. What started out as a “greencard marriage” blossomed from desperate measures into true love and the couple settled into the Bohemian culture of Montreal, Canada.

He Had the Biggest Hit of the ‘00s

The biggest UK singles hit of the last decade, “Evergreen,” was performed as the winning song of Pop Idol UK back in 2002. Today, the Idol franchise produces new stars yearly around the world and was followed by X-Factor in the UK. The track was written by the Swedish songwriters Jörgen Elofsson, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger, and had already been recorded by Westlife.

It only appeared on the Westlife’s album “World of Our Own,” and was never issued as a single. The track immediately topped the UK singles chart, staying there for three consecutive weeks.  The track was included on Will Young’s debut album From Now On. That album produced the No.1 singles “Light My Fire,” and “The Long and Winding Road” as well as “Don’t Let Me Down,” which peaked at No.2.

The second biggest hit of the  ‘00s was “Unchained Melody” with Gareth Gates. He was the runner-up behind Will Young in Pop Idol, and the track succeeded “Evergreen” on the chart.
